Kansas AG Appeals to State Supreme Court on Abortion Ruling

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says he'll ask the state Supreme Court to review a ruling from a lower court that blocks the state from enforcing its first-in-the-nation ban on a common second-trimester abortion procedure. The Republican attorney general said in a statement that Friday's ruling from the Kansas Court of Appeals provides little legal clarity. The Court of Appeals split 7-7, allowing a trial-court judge's decision against the 2015 law to stand. The split means the Court of Appeals upheld the trial-court judge's finding that the state constitution protects abortion rights independently of the U.S. Constitution. Schmidt said ...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Kansas man has pleaded guilty to a bomb hoax that caused the disruption at the Kansas City International Airport. David James Cain of Kansas City, Kansas pleaded guilty Thursday to conveying false information. Prosecutors say Cain left his truck parked in front of Terminal B for more than an hour in August 2014. After announcements were made threatening to tow the truck, Cain told several Southwest Airlines employees a bomb was in the vehicle. Police and FBI bomb experts found no explosive materials. In conjunction with the biggest weekends of football games of the year, Salina's biggest weekend efforts of the year to gather food for the hungry are underway. The 2016 Souper Bowl of Hope has started. The Souper Bowl  is an effort of Salina churches and businesses to gather cans of soup. The soup is donated to five organizations that feed the hungry. Those organizations include: Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank Salina Salvation Army Salina Rescue Mission Ashby House Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas The collection effort came at a critical time. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and his allies are trying to revive their push to remake Kansas' courts by stoking public outrage after recent abortion and death penalty rulings. Brownback has repeatedly advocated overhauling how Kansas Supreme Court justices are selected, potentially giving governors and legislators have more control. Missouri educator to lead Topeka schools

The superintendent of a St. Louis area school district has been named to lead the Topeka school district. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1OOpCa7) that the Topeka Board of Education voted Friday to hire Tiffany Anderson, superintendent of the 2,600-student Jennings School District. Anderson previously led the 10,000-student Montgomery County school district in Virginia. The Topeka Unified School District 501 has 30 schools and 14,000 students. School board president Patrick Woods said Anderson has had tremendous success elsewhere and USD 501's students will benefit from her expertise in curriculum and instruction. Nearly thirty hobbyists received a crash course on the operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or Drones, at the Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus in Salina on Saturday. The course was presented by faculty, and students,  from the K-State Unmanned Aircraft Systems program. It included a two-hour classroom ground school session, followed by an hour-long one-on-one flights session with a K-State drone expert. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) - Sprint Corp. says in state filings that it has given layoff notices to 829 employees at its suburban Kansas City campus in the past three months. The telecommunications company provided the information late Friday in a filing with the Kansas Department of Commerce. The Kansas City Star reports that the notice was filed with the state under a federal law designed to give workers more notice when there are mass layoffs. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A Topeka man facing charges linked to an explosion in his car that injured his 4-year-old son has pleaded not guilty and waived his preliminary hearing. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that through his attorney, Jacob Daniel Schell entered not guilty pleas on Friday in Shawnee County court to charges, including aggravated battery of the child and criminal use of explosives. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Sedgwick County authorities say a 23-year-old man has died after being hit by a car. The sheriff's department says the accident occurred early Saturday morning. Sheriff's Sgt. Lanon Thompson told The Wichita Eagle that emergency crews treated the victim on the scene, but that he died. He says the driver of the vehicle was cooperating with investigators. The victim's name wasn't released.

Wichita State University and a dormitory resident whose room is infested with bed bugs are at odds over who should pay an exterminator for a second round of treatments. A Kansas State University professor has been nominated for two Grammy awards for his solo performance on an album with the Kansas City Chorale. Bryan Pinkall, assistant professor of music, and the Kansas City Chorale were nominated in the categories of Best Choral Performance and Best Engineered Album for their album "Rachmaninoff: All-Night Vigil." LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A man has been taken into custody after authorities say he threatened several people with a knife in a university residence hall in Lawrence. Lawrence Police Department Sgt. Ted Bordman says the 23-year-old was arrested around 5 p.m. Sunday. Bordman says several people were threatened with a knife in a dorm room in a Haskell Indian Nations University residence hall. More than 200 people attended a town hall meeting Sunday to discuss the closing of a Dillon's Market store. Mayor Juliann Owens says the store was closing for financial reasons and because the small store can't be expanded. Feldkamp's Furniture at 1930 South Ninth Street was victim to a burglary on Friday night. Burglars broke in through the back door, causing $250 in damage to the door, and stole a seemingly random assortment of items. A 47" television, air compressor, 3 $25 gift cards, Nike shoes and a digital camera were among just some of the items stolen. A Salina woman was scammed from a Craigslist ad for a home in town. The ad for a home on Birch Street caught the 19-year-old's attention, and when she contacted who she thought was the landlord, she was instructed to send $580 via Moneygram. After she sent the money, the "landlord" stopped communication and she realized she had been scammed.
