Salina Police are investigating an alleged home invasion in which an elderly couple were both battered with a pistol.
Police say that early Saturday morning, at 3:22 AM, officers were dispatched to 1700 N 5th Street. An elderly couple were rushed to the hospital, following what authorities are calling a “home invasion”.

The USD 305 Board of Education in Salina has called a special meeting to accept the resignation of board member Dr. Phil Black and to begin looking for his replacement.
USD 305 Superintendent Bill Hall joined in on the KSAL Morning News Monday with a look at the process and thank Black for his contribution.

Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band are coming to Park City.
Starr, the drummer of the Beatles, has 10 solo top 40 hits. Two of those hits made it to number one.

Voters in Salina are going to have a chance to decide whether or not to raise the sales tax.
City commissioners Monday approved a special mail-in election. Voters will decide whether or not to increase the current 8.40 percent sales tax to 8.75 percent.
Funds raised from the increased tax would be used to improve infrastructure. Improvements would include neighborhood streets and drainage, preserving a stable property tax rate, ensuring a quality park system, constructing and maintaining capital improvements, funding equipment, funding bonded debt issued for capital improvements, and continuing to support a fund managed by the City to attract quality jobs.

WICHTA, Kan. (AP) — A top lawmaker says he plans to file a complaint with the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission seeking an investigation into Gov. Sam Brownback's use of campaign donations to pay more than $167,000 in legal fees last year. The payments came as a federal grand jury was investigating loans his running mate, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, made to their 2014 re-election effort.
Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley said Monday he also plans to ask the ethics panel for an advisory opinion on the legality of a candidate using campaign funds as collateral.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas Senate committee is preparing to debate a bill that would loosen the state's marijuana laws.
The Corrections and Juvenile Justice Committee was meeting Tuesday to discuss a bill that passed the House last year.
The measure would decrease the maximum penalties for first-time, misdemeanor marijuana possession to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine from a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. A second possession conviction would no longer be a felony.

A man died early Tuesday morning following a fight with corrections officers at the Saline County Jail.
Jail Administrator Captain Brent Melander says that a man in his 50s was brought in at around 6:00 Monday evening by Salina Police.
Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that the man was taken into custody after allegedly punching a female acquaintance in the chin during a disturbance in the 2000 block of Norton. Sweeney says that the man resisted officers as he was being taken into custody. He was transported to the Saline County Jail and released into the custody of corrections officers.

A Herington woman has been arrested for allegedly scamming a Salina bank out of over $4,700.
Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that 30-year-old Francesca Garcia-Marrero of Herington was arrested on a warrant Monday.
Garcia-Marrero is accused of depositing funds using fraudulent checks at First Bank Kansas 235 S. Santa Fe, and then immediately withdrawing cash. She did this seven times between July 16th and September 29th, and withdrew $4,708 in cash.
Garcia-Marrero could face charges that include felony theft.

Salina Police are looking for a driver who hit a bicycle rider and did not stop.
Police say that 30-year-old Eric Enslow was riding a bicycle Friday afternoon, headed north on 5th Street. A white SUV, also headed north, sideswiped Enslow as it passed him.
After knocking Enslow to the ground the SUV did not stop.
Enslow sustained a small cut to his forehead and swelling around his left eye. He was treated and released at Salina Regional Health Center.

An anonymous and threatening note found on Tuesday has prompted an increased police presence at McPherson Schools and in the City of McPherson.
According to a message from the McPherson Police Department issued via social media, an anonymous and threatening note was found in a McPherson High School restroom. The note did not specifically threaten individual students.
School officials and the McPherson Police Department investigated the contents of the note. The cooperative investigation yielded no credible threats at this time.

Extra officers will be on Saline County roads looking for drunk drivers late Friday into early Saturday. The Saline County Sheriff’s Office is planning a saturation patrol.
According to the agency, deputies participate in a DUI Saturation Patrol in an effort to decrease the amount of intoxicated drivers on the street.
Deputies will be looking for people driving too slow, crossing center lines, and running red lights in addition to other traffic violations that indicate intoxicated driving.

Saline County Commissioners reviewed a preliminary list of improvement to be made at the EXPO Center during a study session on Tuesday. Commissioner Jim Gile chaired several meetings of an EXPO Center committee that includes interested users. Last week’s meeting produced a prioritized list of improvements that are divided into short and long-term projects.
The 2016 Capital Improvement Fund has a balance of $167,000. The committee assigned these priorities, which have a total projected cost of $138,500, for possible completion in the short term:

A Holcomb man has been arrested on warrant after he allegedly stole and passed checks from Hutchinson last year.
Darrell Beachy, 30, passed three separate checks on May 27 of last year at two different Casey's General Stores and a Kwik Shop for a total of $217.15. He faces six counts of forgery and three counts of theft.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt joined in on the KSAL Morning News Wednesday with a sobering look at human trafficking and prostitution.
"Holding another person for the purposes of exploitation through fear or coercion or other forms of threat is human trafficking," he said.
Schmidt says prosecuting trafficking cases remains difficult because of the relationship between the criminal and victim.
"Usually the victim does not view himself or herself as a victim - especially the sex trafficking case. Because it is a crime of total dependence," Schmidt said.
"The trafficker, the pimp has made himself in the mind of the victim indispensable."

When the Kansas City Royals won the world series, 800,000 fans showed up to celebrate with them at a victory parade and rally. The team is planning to celebrate with fans again, this time giving them a chance to get up close and personal with the World Series trophy.

A judge will hear arguments next month on the request to dismiss the lawsuit filed by a Wichita mathematician who is seeking to audit voting machine results after finding statistical anomalies in election counts.
A hearing has been set for Feb. 18 in Sedgwick County District Court.

Authorities have released the name of a man who died following a confrontation with corrections officers at the Saline County Jail.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, on Tuesday at 5:26 p.m. Salina Police Department officers were dispatched to a report of a disturbance in the 2000 block of Norton Street. When officers arrived, they located a woman with injuries.
Officers arrested 50 year-old Scott A. Brunson on the allegations of domestic battery and resisting arrest. Brunson was transported to the Saline County Jail.
