Anyone wanting to be part of the Advanced Citizen's Academy can pick up an application between now and February 12 from the Saline County Sheriff's Office, the Salina Police Department or can register online. Acknowledging that the process may take time, Director of Community Corrections Annie Grevas chaired the first meeting of the Committee to Reduce Jail Population. The Saline County Commission organized stakeholders and interested citizens to offer insights on a variety of criminal justice issues. Jail Administrator, Captain Brett Melander said that as of today, 256 individuals are being held by the Saline County Sheriff’s Office. Of these, 172 are physically housed at the Saline County Jail while 84 are housed at jails outside of Saline County—often at a cost of $30/day. Numerous roads across western and central Kansas are snow-packed and icy as a winter storm moves across the state. Some of the worst conditions were reported Wednesday in Hays, Salina, Hutchinson and Plainville. Kansas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Ann Williamson advised people to stay off the roads if possible. She says it gives crews a chance to work. Great Lakes Airlines Excited to Fly Salina

News of new flights to Denver from a new air carrier, Great Lakes Airlines, came out of the Salina Regional Airport last week on Wednesday. That was followed just a couple of days later, late Friday night, by news of the current carrier, Seaport Airlines, abruptly ending its Salina service. Portland based Seaport Airlines had been the commercial air service in and out of Salina for the past four years. They were set to be replaced by Great Lakes April 1st. Kansas Turnpike Tolls Increasing

Drivers who pay tolls with cash on the Kansas Turnpike will have to pay more, beginning in May. The Kansas Turnpike Authority announced Wednesday that cash tolls will increase 10 percent while costs for those who use the electronic K-Tag will get discounts. The revenue from the tolls will help pay for a more than 40 projects on the turnpike in the next decade. The projects include spending $14 million annually on pavement, up to $20 million to improve service areas and $25 million on an interchange in Wichita. The Turnpike Authority receives no tax funding and supports its operations through user fees.

A Salina man was arrested yesterday after throwing beer around Walgreens at 700 South Broadway and at the clerk working at the store. 49-year-old William Jimerson went into Walgreens last night around 7:00 PM. Walmart Chainsaw Misdemeanor

Two chainsaws were stolen from the bed of a truck in the Walmart parking lot yesterday afternoon. Cole Malmberg of Minneapolis was exiting Walmart yesterday when he saw someone standing next to his truck. The individual then took two chainsaws out of Malmberg's truck, one an Echo the other a Stihl, valued at $750. The suspect left in a black or brown pickup. Lawmakers from both parties are criticizing Gov. Sam Brownback's administration for its handling of a contract for a new state power plant in Topeka. House and Senate members on Wednesday said a $20 million lease-purchase deal for the plant was done without legislative oversight and essentially ensures that the Docking State Office Building will be demolished, which some lawmakers oppose. The cost of the 15-year contract is millions more than previously disclosed. And the first payment due in March wasn't included in the budget Brownback submitted this month. (AP) — A Senate committee chairman has imposed a dress code for Kansas residents testifying on an elections or ethics bill that prohibits women from wearing certain clothing while establishing no wardrobe restrictions exclusively for men. A rule of Sen. Mitch Holmes' 11-point code of conduct says "low-cut necklines and miniskirts" are inappropriate for women. A report for the Kansas Board of Regents says a total of 815 students who don't meet minimum admission requirements are enrolled in the state's universities. The report says the exceptions to the standards made up between a fraction of 1 percent up to 7 percent of each university's 2014-2015 in-state freshman class. The exceptions comprised between 1 percent and 10 percent of universities' out-of-state freshmen admissions. The annual report on admissions is forwarded to the Kansas Legislature. Woman Threatened with Knife, Man Arrested

A Salina man was arrested yesterday after holding a woman at knife point outside her front door yesterday afternoon. 26-year-old Douglas Burdine of Salina allegedly went to a female acquaintance's house yesterday around 12:30. He held a knife up to her neck, and then she started calling for help. Burdine then pushed his victim into her home. A passerby heard her cry for help and alerted Salina police. Upon arrival, the victim couldn't be located as she escaped through the backdoor. Shortly thereafter, she returned to the residence. Drug Task Force Chalks Two

After a month of of surveillance, the Drug Task Force has arrested two people in conjunction with a meth lab in residential Salina. Sean Muchow, 26, and Stacy Humphrey, 30, were arrested yesterday from the 1900 block of Dover.  Between December 22 and January 20, the Drug Task Force ran five controlled buys from the residence. Through these controlled buys, the two allegedly sold 47 grams of meth, 6.2 grams of marijuana and 30 grams of a simulated controlled substance, or fake meth. The people of Salina have declared "Peace."  The votes have been counted, and “Daughters of Peace” is Salina’s favorite sculpture. “Daughters of Peace”, located in the 200 Block of South Santa Fe, is the 2015 Sculpture Tour Salina People’s Choice Award winner.
