Animal Shelter Getting Makeover

The Salina Animal Shelter will be getting a much-needed makeover this month. Animal Services Supervisor Vanessa Cowie tells KSAL News that resurfacing and sealing of the floor, and replacement of the aged aluminum kennels will begin next week. The resurfaced, sealed floor will be more comfortable for the animals. It will be easier to clean, making it more sanitary. It is replacing an aging, cracked floor. Man, Woman Die in Fiery Kansas City, Kansas, Crash

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - A man and a woman have died in a fiery crash in Kansas City, Kansas. Police said in a news release that the crash happened early Friday. The release says that the preliminary investigation indicates that the victims were in a speeding vehicle that left the roadway, hit a tree stump and caught on fire. The man was in his mid-60s and the woman in her late 40s. Their names weren't immediately released, pending positive identification and notification of family members. The crash is under investigation.

The commercial air carrier that currently flies in and out of Salina is discontinuing all scheduled service immediately.  Seaport Airlines is discontinuing all scheduled service in Kansas and Missouri as of 11:59pm Saturday. It stopped service to destinations in California and Mexico as of 11:59pm on Friday. Repeated misses in Kansas' monthly revenue projections has clouded the state's ability to balance budgets, and some lawmakers are thinking the process could use reform. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback's latest spending plan unveiled days ago for the fiscal year that begins in July projects a $190 million hole. He believes that can be patched by such things as juggling state funds and selling off assets of the privatization-bound Kansas Bioscience Authority. A man charged with child sex crimes was hired as a Wichita teacher last fall after a background check failed to uncover that he resigned from a southwest Kansas community college amid a child pornography investigation. Sixty-two-year-old Steven Thompson, of Wichita, was charged this month with three counts of sexual exploitation of a child in Finney County, where he previously was a tenured computer science instructor at Garden City Community College. A Salina man has been arrested in connection with a recent alleged aggravated battery in which a woman was hit with a stick that had nails protruding from it. Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that 34-year-old Eric Schiltz was arrested Monday evening, following a short foot chase that ended inside the Oakdale Towers senior apartments. He ran when officers arrived at his home at 644 Gypsum to arrest him on a warrant. Saline County Sheriff Deputies, along with Game Wardens from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism are investigating a case involving animals being illegally killed. According to Saline County Sheriff Captain Roger Soldan, deputies on Friday responded to a report of a large number of dead geese in the 4500 Block of Humbarger Road. They discovered 36 white geese that had been shot, and thrown into a culvert. Soldan says that it is being investigated as a wildlife crime, a violation of the Kansas wanton waste law. Backfire Leads To Truck Fire

A backfire preceded a fire that destroyed a truck and its contents. According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, a 1977 Ford F 150 pickup truck was headed to the Saline County landfill Friday afternoon. The truck backfired, and stopped at the intersection of Water Well and Halstead Roads. The driver realized the truck was on fire as he went to restart it. Fire Damages Brookville Building

A fire caused extensive damage to the inside of a building in Brookville. According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, the owner of a building on Anderson Street left the building for several hours on Saturday, and left a fire burning in a wood burning stove. He returned to find smoke filling the building. Rural Fire District #3 responded. A fire started in the chimney, but burnt itself out before spreading to the roof. Arrest in High Price Heist Case

A Salina man has been arrested in connection with a recent high priced heist that included stolen jewelry and guns. Police say that 37-year-old John Bennett Jr. was arrested Sunday. Bennett is accused of stealing jewelry including two Rolex watches, a Remington shotgun and a semi automatic rifle. The items were stolen from a duplex in the 500 block of Claflin. Bennett lives in one half of the duplex. Bennett could face charges that include burglary, theft, and criminal possession of a firearm. The Board of County Commissioners agreed to enter into a Letter of Intent with Heartland Services to fund two Family Consultant positions, that provide “Outreach, Prevention and Early Intervention Services” under a grant. A Salina man was arrested after police found him in Callabresi Heating and Cooling early this morning. Salina Police was dispatched in reference to an alarm set off at the business located at 1311 Armory Road. When police arrived, they saw someone emerge from the building, and when the suspect saw the police, he reentered the building and locked the door behind him.
