The counterfeit bill issue in Salina remains pertinent as two more cases were reported yesterday.
The Arena located at 427 South Broadway and Casey's at 1100 East Iron both reported cases of counterfeit $20 bills. The Arena brought theirs to Sunflower Bank who reported it. Both bills were brought in on Tuesday

Two different reported cases in Salina land two people in the hospital, and two to the Saline County Jail.
39-year-old Michael Squires is facing an aggravated battery charge after an incident in mid-December. On December 15, a 40-year-old from south Salina was allegedly pulled to the ground causing a head injury and a cut on the chin by Squires. Squires left the scene prior to police arrival, and was incarcerated yesterday.

Three men who were arrested earlier this month in Saline County have been indicted on federal drug charges.
According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom's Office a grand jury in Topeka returned indictments against:
Adrian Ayala-Garcia, 23, a citizen of Mexico who has been living in Abilene, Kan., one count of possessing approximately 18 pounds of methamphetamine with intent to distribute; one count of unlawful possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking; and one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

Two residential thefts were reported in Salina yesterday, one with a very hefty price tag.
A theft on the 1100 block of North Fifth Street left a man with a $49,036 loss. Two handguns, assorted jewelry were stolen from the property. No suspects are named yet.
Another theft was reported on the 900 block of Somerset. A brown cello was stolen between Monday and Wednesday from the residence. The cello was valued at $1700.

For most the thought of running a mile is daunting and setting a record even more challenging. Bethany College Track Coach Aaron Yoder decided to take those challenges and make them just a little bit harder by doing both…backwards.
Yoder was recently notified by Guinness World Book of Records that he is the official title holder for the Fastest Run Backwards, One Mile. His record time, 5 minutes 54.25 seconds, was achieved on November 23, 2015 in Lindsborg. The run was recorded by photographer Jim Turner of Lindsborg and posted on YouTube.

A new chief will soon be in charge of the Salina Fire Department.
According to the City of Salina, City Manager Jason Gage has appointed Kevin Royse as Fire Chief. Royse was one of 32 candidates from across the country who applied for the position.
Royse is the current Junction City Fire Chief. He comes to Salina with nearly 29 years of fire service experience.
Royse's fire service career began in Wichita, where he held various ranks including battalion chief prior to accepting his current chief role in 2013. He holds both masters and bachelors degrees in Criminal Justice from Wichita State University, ...

An Abilene Middle School student was arrested Wednesday afternoon after allegedly taking a gun to school.
Abilene Police Lt. Mike Mohn tells KSAL News that his agency received a report that a student had taken a gun to Abilene Middle School. Officers were able to make contact with the student as he was walking home from school. A handgun was recovered from the student's backpack.

The first bill to clear the Kansas Legislature this year and go to Gov. Sam Brownback designates Cowley County as the state's stone bridge capital.
The House approved it on a 118-1 vote Thursday. The Senate unanimously approved the measure last year.
Brownback told The Associated Press that he hasn't reviewed the bill but believes he'd able to sign it.
The measure says Cowley County in south-central Kansas is home to 18 stone arch bridges built before 1910, and all but one still carry traffic daily.

Salina will recognize the life, legacy, and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend. Multiple events are planned.
Events begin Friday evening with a Jazz concert and open mic event. The concert is 6pm-7pm on the first floor lobby of the Smoky Hill Museum at 211 W. Iron. Nature enthusiasts in Kansas say they they're seeing a revival of bald eagles across the state, and events are planned to give the public a good look at the once-endangered birds.
This spring and summer, Kansas is expected to have at least 100 pairs of bald eagles nesting atop the state's cottonwoods and sycamores.
Over the next few weekends, Kansas conservation groups and nature centers are inviting the public to free viewings of the eagles.

Two people were arrested in a flee and elude where passengers exited the moving vehicle that started just off 135 and ended east of town.
Last night at 8:15, a Sheriff's deputy clocked a vehicle going 88mph on 135. When the vehicle exited the highway on Water Well Road where the deputy attempted to hail the vehicle. The driver took off at a high rate of speed, reaching about 100 mph on Water Well. An ATV caught fire yesterday at around 3:30PM on the 5300 block of South Halstead, which was detected when one of the passengers said he felt his seat getting warm.
The driver and passenger, who are employees at C&W Ranch, were driving the 2015 Polaris Ranger 900 XP, when the passenger felt his seat getting hot. When the two got out of the vehicle, they discovered the ATV was on fire.
The vehicle was a total loss, valued tat $14,900. There have been other reports of similar incidents recorded in other parts of the country.

Sheriff Glen Kochanowski has announced that he will not be running in the upcoming election for Saline County Sheriff.
Sheriff Kochanowski has served in law enforcement for 51 years, and has served as Sheriff for 19 years. He is 73 years old, and will be 74 by the end of his career.

A reported case of forgery and counterfeiting hit two different businesses in Salina.
Walmart found a counterfeit $10 bill in one of their cash drawers yesterday and immediately reported to the Salina Police Department.
Moneyzone Inc., located at 1819 South Broadway, cashed a check on December 31 to a woman with a check from Eurocars Inc. out of Gladstone, Oregon. It was reported fraudulent yesterday, and was reported to police.

A long-time Saline County Sheriff Deputy plans to run for Sheriff. Captain Roger Soldan announced late Friday afternoon that he intends to run for for the office.
Soldan has been with the Saline County Sheriff's Office for 28 years.
Soldan started his career in the juvenile detention center at the age of 21. During his career he has served as a corrections officer, patrol deputy, traffic safety officer, criminal investigator, sergeant, lieutenant, and jail administrator. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A Kansas judge has ruled that Secretary of State Kris Kobach has no legal right to bar people who register to vote using a federal form from voting in local and state elections.
Shawnee County District Judge Franklin Theis (Tice) ruled Friday in favor of two Kansas voters who challenged how Kobach is enforcing a state proof-of-citizenship requirement for registering to vote.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - The Kansas House will vote next week whether to allow changes to the petition process that allows citizens to convene grand juries.
The House debated the bill Thursday and advanced it to final action on a voice vote. The final vote is scheduled for Tuesday. If approved, it would go to the Senate.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Kansas City woman whose daughter was 10 years old and weighed just 32 pounds when she was rescued from a closet has been sentenced to 34 years in prison.
The Kansas City Star reports that the mother screamed after she was sentenced Friday for endangering, abusing and assaulting the girl. Police officers found the girl barricaded in an apartment closet in June 2012 while responding to a child abuse hotline call.
