Cimarron Implemented Emergency Closure After Cattle Deaths

ELKHART, Kan. (AP) - Part of the Cimarron National Grassland is closed during an investigation into the deaths of seven cattle. The closure imposed in December at the grassland in Morton County will last until at least May 1, or until it is rescinded. About 2,600 of the 108,000-acre land are closed to all motorized and non-motor access. The Morton County Grazing Association leases the grassland each year. Some range riders found the cattle dead in October. A veterinarian determined the animals had inhaled something that caused their deaths. As the seventh counterfeit $100 since the turn of the year surfaced yesterday in Salina, Salina police are urging caution to businesses that accept these bills. Yesterday, a counterfeit $100 bill surfaced at Taco Johns at Central Mall between 2-6PM. The bill was discovered by employees at the business. A residential theft in Salina leaves a victim with over a $10,000 in loss. The theft occurred during the day yesterday on the 500 block of West Claflin. Various jewelry pieces, two Rolex watches, a Remington shotgun and a semi automatic rifle were stolen from the residence, totaling a loss of $10,355. Bobby Kaufmann says the Iowa House government oversight committee will investigate how it was possible for an employee at the Multi-State Lottery Association to allegedly fix jackpots. LIBERAL, Kan. (AP) — Authorities are trying to determine what caused an explosion and fire at a southwest Kansas business. The explosion Tuesday at Groendyke Transport Inc., southeast of Liberal, injured four people. Seward County Fire Chief Andrew Barkley says a propane or natural gas tanker inside a large metal building exploded and caught fire for still-undetermined reasons. The Hutchinson News reports fire crews believe the tanker was empty but employees reported gas vapors were released. Allin and Donna Phister and their son, Thorton, all of Leawood, presented the spoon Tuesday to the Kansas Museum of History. The spoon belonged to one of their ancestors, Christina McCoy. Four more counterfeit bills have surfaced in Salina businesses. A counterfeit $20 bill was found in a deposit at Dillon's at 1201 West Crawford on Monday. The new track at Kansas Wesleyan University is available for public use. According to KWU, they have established a public use policy for the newly opened Graves Family Sports Complex. JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) -  Three Junction City men have been arrested in a kidnapping, robbery and shooting. The suspects are jailed in Geary County without bond while awaiting their first appearance. Sheriff Tony Wolf says deputies went to a residence near Milford on Monday night after receiving a report about a kidnapping and robbery. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A coroner says a woman whose body would found in a Kansas creek was strangled. The body of 38-year-old Mary Ann Arnett was found in a creek south of Nickerson in June 2015. Jamie Hatfield, of Hutchinson, is charged with premeditated first-degree murder, aggravated intimidation of a witness and conspiracy to commit murder in Arnett's death. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week. Prosecutors say Hatfield and Jonathan Perser-Wilson were involved in Arnett's death.
