Members of the Kansas Children's Cabinet criticized the leader of their group for excluding them from recent funding recommendations for early childhood programs.
The recommendations come in a document that says they are "from the Kansas Children's Cabinet." But group members said they didn't vote on them.
Amanda Adkins, the group's chairwoman, said Friday she needed to move quickly in order to get the recommendations to lawmakers during the budget process.
Cabinet members didn't express opposition to the recommendations themselves, and in some cases praised them.

A Wichita man was hurt in crash along Interstate 135 in Saline County early Monday morning.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 54-year-old Robert Brown of Wichita was driving a 2005 Mini Cooper, headed north. For an unknown reason he lost control, slid into the east ditch, and rolled. The car came to rest on the right shoulder facing southwest.
Brown was hurt, and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center. It is unknown if he was buckled up.
The crash happened at 12:17 Monday morning, on I-135 in Saline County a mile north of the McPherson/Saline County line.

A Salina man was killed in a single vehicle crash early Monday morning.
According to Salina Police, 24-year-old Carlos Manuel Luna-Diaz was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on 9th Street. In the 5-Corners area at 9th a Pacific he lost control, locked up the brakes, and crashed into a power pole.
Luna-Diaz was partially ejected, and was killed in the crash.
The pole and attached overhead lines were damaged, and caused a short power outage.
The crash, which happened at around 12:40 in the morning, is still under investigation. Police say that speed was a factor.

The latest list of Salina’s Most Wanted went online over the weekend. Four on the list have been caught.

Lashinna Smith
The first weekend of each month a new list of Salina’s Most Wanted is released. Those on the list this month are wanted for crimes that include sex crimes, child endangerment crimes, aggravated battery, burglary, theft, forgery, interference with a law enforcement officer, and felony drug crimes.

A Salina man was arrested late Friday night following a single-vehicle crash in rural Saline County.
According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, 21-year-old Patrick Bryan was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry when he spun out of control. The car skidded onto its side.
Authorities say that Bryan's story was that a deer ran out, and he swerved to miss it.
He is accused, though, of falsely reporting how the crash happened. Instead, authorities believe that Bryan attempted to “drift" his vehicle on the corner of North Street east of Simpson Road, pulling the emergency brake while still driving the car. It caused ...

The Morrison House is collecting coins in February to help keep accommodations open for families who need a place to stay while loved ones are hospitalized in Salina.
Lisa Hoffman, Manager at the Morrison House joined in on KSAL Morning News Monday with a look at 'Pennies From the Heart for the Home with the Heart.'

The Kansas secretary of state's office says the number of businesses in the state grew by 5 percent last year.
Secretary of State Kris Kobach's office reported Monday that Kansas had about 179,000 businesses at the end of 2015. That's about 8,600 more than at the end of 2014.
Kobach's office noted that a record of nearly 17,300 businesses formed in Kansas last year.
Republican Gov. Sam Brownback has pointed to annual records for new business formations each year since 2011 as a sign that his tax-cutting policies are boosting the economy.

The country rock band who loves to go "Fishin in the Dark" is headed for the spotlight on stage at the Stiefel Theatre this spring.
Jane Gates, Executive Director of the Stiefel tells KSAL News that The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is coming to Salina and will perform a live concert Thursday, June 2nd.
The band is celebrating its 50th anniversary and is known as a catalyst in the American music scene for five decades with songs like "Mr. Bojangles" and "Make a Little Magic."

An Arizona man was sentenced Monday to 5 years in federal prison for driving 12 pounds of methamphetamine from Arizona to Kansas.
According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom's Office, 39-year-old Jose Francisco Beltran from Tucson, Arizona ,pleaded guilty to one count of interstate travel in furtherance of drug trafficking.
In his plea, he admitted that on Aug. 27, 2015, the Kansas Highway Patrol stopped him on Interstate 70 in Lincoln County. Troopers discovered approximately 12 pounds of methamphetamine and a half pound of powder cocaine.
Beltran told investigators he picked up the drugs in Arizona and was delivering them to Wichita.

The Kansas City Royals Trophy Tour is underway.
The Royals World Series trophy has headed out on the road, and is making stops in communities so fans can get an up close look at it, and take photos with it. The tour began Monday morning, with a stop at the University of Central Missouri.
One of stops along the way will be in Salina.

Salina City Commissioners Monday were reluctant to give final approval for additional funding for the Fieldhouse Salina project. In lieu of approving a second reading of an ordinance that would allow the city bonding authority to increase its funding contribution to up to $9.5 million for its share of the project, commissioners instead delayed the decision.

Police are investigating after a large amount of cash was stolen from a Salina restaurant.
Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that a burglar targeted the Taco John's at 303 South Santa Fe.
Sometime on Monday, in the overnight hours between about 12:30 and 5:30, $1,953 was stolen. The money was taken from a safe.
There was no forced entry to the building.

Tax season means scam season. Salina Police are urging citizens to beware of tax-related scams.
Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that typically the scam begins as a phone call, and "scare tactics" are used.
The caller claims to be from the IRS, or some other government agency, and claims that delinquent taxes are owed. To avoid going immediately to jail, money must be sent via Western Union or some similar service.
The IRS, or any other government agency, does not make contact via an unsolicited phone call.

The executive directors of both the Kansas Republican Party and the Kansas Democratic Party will be in Salina for an event this week. Clay Barker, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, and Kerry Gooch, executive director of the Kansas Democratic Party, will participate in a public event at the K-State Polytechnic Campus in Salina.

Salina City Manager Jason Gage says getting the design finalized for Fieldhouse Salina is a key stepping stone in making the project a reality.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas is appealing a judge's ruling that the state must release candidates' applications for two county commission openings filled by Gov. Sam Brownback.
The state has filed a notice of appeal in the lawsuit brought by The Salina Journal and The Associated Press seeking the disclosure of information on more than two dozen applicants for newly created Saline County Commission seats.
Saline County residents voted in November 2014 to expand the commission from three to five members.

Police are investigating an alleged embezzlement at a Salina bar.
According to Police Captain Mike Sweeney, money and alcohol were stolen from Chuck's Bar at 600 N. Santa Fe.
Sweeney says that the bar reports that sometime between December 16th and January 1st, $600 in cash, a case of beer, and a bottle of Jameson Whiskey were stolen. Total loss is placed at $660.
The loss, which is being investigated as an embezzlement, was discovered during an audit.

The discovery of fireworks above a ceiling tile prompted a Salina school to contact police.
Police say that on Monday four packages of TNT brand firecrackers were discovered hidden above a ceiling in a boy's bathroom at Lakewood Middle School. The fireworks were found after a student saw someone he did not recognize place something in the ceiling.
Police confiscated the fireworks, but have not identified the person who hid them.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A bill designed to address sexting among middle and high school students has advanced in the House.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the chamber is expected to vote Wednesday on whether to send the bill to the Senate. It's focused on 12- to 18-year-olds accused of transmitting images of a nude child.
Under existing state law, prosecutors were restricted to filing a felony that carries a sentence of up to 11 years in prison and lifetime registration as a sex offender.
