A group of hearty volunteers is getting ready to go off the deep end, and take an icy dip. The Salina Polar Plunge event to help support Kansas Special Olympics is Saturday, February 20th, at the Webster Conference Center. The event features an entire morning of activities, including a "Polar 5k" run, a costume contest, and a pancake feed. A pancake feed will begin the day, starting at 7:30 in the morning. Kansas transportation officials are discouraging travel to western Kansas as a massive winter storm continues causing extreme travel problems. The Kansas Department of Transportation says snow and high winds have forced many highways to close west of Salina. That has resulted in hotels filling up and tractor-trailers being stranded along highways. As of Tuesday afternoon westbound Interstate 70 was closed from Salina to the Colorado border, while eastbound I-70 was closed from the Colorado state line to Hays. Court documents show a federal raid of a hunting lodge in the Flint Hills capped a months-long investigation that included the use of undercover hunters, GPS tracking of vehicles and camera surveillance. Federal agents executed the search warrant on Jan. 26 on Eagle Head Outfitters Lodge in Grenola. Court documents filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Kansas show authorities seized cameras, phones, photos, firearms, ledgers, waterfowl and other items. Frustrated by a lack of progress in repairing a railroad crossing at the 3300 block of East County Club Road, Saline County Commissioners instructed County Counselor Mike Montoya to notify the Union Pacific Railroad, Scoular Grain, and Exline. HAYS, Kan. (AP) - Residents of northwest Kansas are digging out from a winter storm that dumped more than a foot of snow on some areas. National Weather Service meteorologist Jessica Hill says 4 to 15 inches of snow fell across the region before the storm moved out Tuesday afternoon. She says wind gusts of up to 50 mph blew the snow into large drifts in some areas. The snow left many roads in the region packed with snow and icy. Police are looking for a thief who allegedly embezzled a large amount of money from a Salina man's disability account. 38-year-old Nathan Thompson reported that between June 25th of 2015 and February 2nd 0f 2016, money was embezzled from his account. The craft show at the Smoky Hill River Festival is one of the top 50 in the country. According to Salina Arts and Humanities, the national ranking of the Smoky Hill River Festival’s Four Rivers Craft Show rose 57 slots in the annual Art Fair SourceBook ranking for 2015, released January 16. Work at a Salina quarry has been recognized for its conservation efforts with a Governor's Award. According to Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Conservation, Alsop Sand Co. Inc. of Concordia has been awarded the 2015 Governor’s Mined Land Reclamation Award for their reclamation work at their Salina quarry. This award is presented to a company that demonstrated excellence in implementing mined land reclamation and conveying a positive image of mining in Kansas. A man of firsts will be highlighted during the First Thursday Presentation tomorrow at the Smoky Hill Museum. Robert Caldwell was born in Pittsburgh, Kansas just before WW I, and broke social barriers to became the first African-American Mayor in Salina. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow teachers and school administrators to be prosecuted for presented material perceived as harmful to minors. The bill passed the Senate last year and was considered in a House committee Tuesday. It stems from a 2014 controversy in the Shawnee Mission school district over a poster in a sex education classroom that listed oral sex and other acts as ways people express their sexual feelings. According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom's Office, the former branch manager of Kansas State Bank was sentenced Wednesday to 27 months in federal prison for embezzlement. In addition, she was ordered to pay $277,000 in restitution. 34-year-old Melissa Vinsonhaler pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement from a bank. A small portion of Downtown Salina looked a little like Christmas Wednesday evening. Bright colored winter scarves were wrapped around trees, poles, and meters in an alley between Santa Fe and 7th Street. The scarves were not decorations. They were gifts for those who might be trying to fight off the cold. Each scarf had a small note attached to it, saying it was free for the taking. Retired White House Press Corps member Mark Reinstein spoke at Kansas Wesleyan University. Reinstein began as a freelance photographer for The Washington Star. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - A mason working at Kansas State University has found an 88-year-old handwritten note that gives a glimpse into the lives of laborers in 1928. The mason found the note in a tobacco can he encountered in December while restoring and replacing stones at Kansas State University's East Memorial Stadium in Manhattan.
