An explosive ordinance disposal unit from Fort Riley responded to Salina Monday to help dispose of an artillery shell.
Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that the shell belonged to a recently deceased Salina man, whose wife called a friend to dispose of it. The friend took the shell to a home at 1213 Talley, and then decided to contact police. Police received the call at 3:21 in the afternoon.
Sweeney says that both the Kansas Highway Patrol and the unit from Fort Riley responded, and six surrounding houses were evacuated as a precaution.
