TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will be part of the Kansas Republican caucuses next year.
The Kansas Republican Party said in a news release Wednesday that Christie paid the $15,000 filing fee to qualify for the March 5 caucuses.
Christie visited Kansas several times in 2014 to campaign for Gov. Sam Brownback's re-election. He was chairman of the Republican Governors Association at the time.
He is the seventh candidate to file for the Kansas caucuses. Others are Donald Trump, Ben Carson, U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

A Salina driver reached dangerous speeds through mid-town Salina early this morning, but his race met an end that landed him in police custody.
Vernon Howard III was driving his 1999 red Ford Contour near Tenth and South Street when an officer observed the driver not using his turn signal. The driver took Ninth Street southbound, and when he turned onto Prescott, the officer turned on his lights. The car began to accelerate, and the officer turned on his sirens. The chase took them to Santa Fe where Howard reached speeds of 60 mph, then on Crawford where he reached 75 ...

A Salina woman was arrested after she hit another woman in the face, sending the woman to Salina Regional.
Robin Harrington, 29 of East Salina, was arguing with a female acquaintance in her 40's when she allegedly began to batter the woman in the face, leaving the woman with bruises. Harrington also threatened the victim with a knife.
She faces charges of battery and aggravated assault.

An Xbox with two games and a black bag with a Michael Jordan jersey was stolen from a residence on the 1200 block of Yale yesterday morning between 7:10-7:20 for a total loss of $610. The residence was left unlocked.
A counterfeit $100 bill was found in the overnight deposit from Tuesday's dropoff from Sonic located at 310 South Santa Fe. The bill was discovered by Sunflower Bank at 176 North Santa Fe.

Three watches and an AK47 were stolen from a residence on the 600 block of Johnstown Avenue sometime between December 3-16.
Two Bulova watches, one crystal, one diamond encrusted and one blue faced Seiko watch were stolen, as well as a Czech AK47 with a black composite barrel and an unknown quantity of Zanex and Zoloft.
Total loss is valued at $3,375.

Chef Bill Fekas grew up in Athens, Greece - but loves Christmas in America.
Fekas stopped by the KSAL Morning News with a look at the upcoming 33rd Annual Fekas Family Christmas Dinner.
"Growing up we ate so many delicious things wrapped in grape leaves and sauce, like a delicious lemon sauce," he said.

Police in Hutchinson are handing out $100 bills to the needy thanks to an anonymous donor.
Hutchinson Police Capt. Troy Hoover says the donor asked police to provide random acts of kindness to people in need. The Hutchinson News reports that police don't even know the identity of the donor. The Fraternal Order of Police has matched the donation.
So far police have distributed $1,400. Hoover says police will give another $1,600 before it is done.
Hoover says the recipients include single mothers working multiple jobs, military veterans in difficult financial circumstances and people caring for terminally ill family members.

The Kansas Aviation Museum has terminated two of its five-person staff and announced it will be reducing visitor hours next year.
Richard Moore, the museum's interim director, said Wednesday the two positions that were cut this week were full-time marketing jobs. According to Moore, the terminations were a way to absorb the museum's slow traffic.
Moore said if the two employees who were laid off do not have new jobs by the middle of May, the museum would consider rehiring them.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Documents have revealed that Washburn University in Topeka paid $45,000 to settle a federal discrimination lawsuit involving its dean of libraries.
Michelle Canipe, a former instructional librarian at Washburn, sued the university and Alan Bearman in May 2013, claiming the dean bullied, harassed or sexually discriminated against Canipe.
The lawsuit also claimed that Bearman and the school created or tolerated a sexually hostile environment and retaliated against Canipe for complaining about unequal treatment.
Federal court records show a U.S. district judge terminated the case in March 2014, indicating the parties had reached an agreement.

A Salina man was one of two people killed in a three vehicle crash in southern Kansas Thursday morning.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2003 Ford Econoline van driven by 22-year-old Yvonne Butticci of Salina was headed south on K-61 Highway. The van crossed the center line and sideswiped a semi driven by 57-year-old Larry Ankney of Muskogee, Oklahoma. The van then continued into the northbound lane. It hit head-on a 2005 Toyota Prius driven by 39-year-old Teresa Roach of Pratt.

Much like other locations around the country, Star Wars movie fans are lining up to see the premier of new movie in the franchise, "Star Wars The Force Awakens."
Starplex Cinema Manager Tammy Kromer tells KSAL that several hundred tickets to the premier sold in advance.

PRATT, Kan. (AP) — A Pratt County man has died after a space heater caught fire in his camper.
The 68-year-old man was the sole occupant of the approximately 8-by-12 or -14 feet camper, located about five miles south of Pratt and about 10 and a half miles to the west.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The chairman of a Kansas House committee that handles legislation on abortion and gay-rights issues is resigning to lead a conservative group seeking to influence social policy.
Republican Representative Steve Brunk of Wichita submitted a letter of resignation to the secretary of state's office Thursday. He is stepping down January 4th.

A Wichita man was apprehended yesterday morning in Salina when he was found driving a stolen car.
Randy Shelinbarger, 59 of Wichita, was driving a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica on the 800 block of East Crawford when an officer in a tag reading vehicle got a positive hit on his tags.
It was then discovered that the vehicle was stolen from Wichita. The keys were left in the vehicle, and the vehicle was valued at $5,000.

After a ten year wait for Star Wars heroes to return to the big screen, Salina turned out in big numbers to Thursday's premiere showing at the Starplex Cinema.
Starplex Cinema Manager Tammy Kromer tells KSAL News that 400 tickets sold for the first shows, selling out two theatres.
One trio of friends attending the film's opening night were Jared Davis, Holly Treloggen and Matthew Pantle, all students at Southeast of Saline High School.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Former members of the Kansas African American Affairs Commission say politics is holding up the appointment of an executive director.
The Wichita Eagle reports that former commission members said the board last summer interviewed several potential leaders for the commission and chose three. The selections were presented to the governor, but none was approved.
James Barfield of Wichita was involved in the selection process before his commission appointment expired in June. He says people were disqualified because they weren't Republicans. He says the administration wants to "micromanage the board."

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Wichita city officials have chosen Duluth, Minnesota's police chief to lead the largest police force in Kansas.
The city announced Friday that 43-year-old Gordon Ramsay will become Wichita's new police chief on Jan. 28. He will be paid $170,000 a year.
Ramsay said in a statement that he was humbled and "beyond excited" to be chosen for the job.
Ramsay has been Duluth's police chief since 2006 and a police officer for 22 years. The Duluth department has a $25 million budget and more than 200 employees.
